The Angels in Evangelion appear to be aliens, or some sort of strange lifeform invading the world, trying to destroy it. However, they are much more than mere creatures. If humanity lost, it was proof that humanity no longer deserved to go on, if the Angels were defeated, then Humanity could decide its own fate. Therefore, Humanity is the 18th Angel.
